 Oh, Baby!

I visited with a friend of mine while I was volunteering at the hospital Friday evening. I haven't seen her since I had heard that she was expecting a baby.

The baby is due on 07/07/07, but she has been told to have bed rest, so she said she was being held hostage in the hospital, but she wasn't too adamant about disobeying doctor's orders either.

Okay, you are probably saying, "So what? People have babies all the time." Right?

And it is true. People do have babies all the time. However, this particular friend has never had a baby before. "OK," you are thinking, "so this is her first one! Big deal!"

Well, it is a big deal. You see my friend and her husband have been married 26 years and my friend is 51 years old. They never thought they could have children and voila! Now talk about a shocker!

Anyway, my friend looked radiant, and by the way, doesn't look her age or act it either, so that is a plus. The best plus is they are thrilled beyond belief. She said the anticipation of being a mom is so incredible it is beyond description.

If every mother felt that way, wouldn't this be a different world?

Have a wonderful weekend!

Love you guys, Karen

TOO TIRED TO THINK OF A TITLE

Well, time has already flown by and I said in my previous post that I would continue my retirement story. But, I think I'll leave it as is. The last day we worked together, May 26th, had some bittersweet moments mixed in with some very special moments, so I think I'll just keep those in my memories.

I spent the last few days with my daughter and two of my grandchildren to help out. The kids were sick, so I stayed with them while my daughter picked up her work. She does insurance billing for a doctor.

I think I hugged them one time too many and came down with a cold, so fighting that off right now.

Being a parent is the hardest job in the world. The responsibility is unbeatable. You parents out there know exactly what I mean. But, being a grandparent is the most pleasurable job in the world and the most rewarding. HANDS DOWN!!!!!!

I still feel all warm and fuzzy from the visit with them. Of course there were those moments, just like those parent moments with the vomiting and poopy diapers. Ah the memories!!!!!!

Well, time to medicate myself again and get some sleep. I've had little feet kicking me in the back the last two nights and also little arms embracing me, but either one kept me from sleeping very well.

Good Night to everyone who just might happen by tonight. God Bless! Karen

 I'm A Civilian Once Again!

As of yesterday, 11:31 AM, I'm retired! It hasn't quite sunk in yet, but I THINK the doom and gloom will rear its ugly head, even for a short moment or two. However, going out was a lot of fun and I do believe it is going to be just fine, in fact it is going to be FAN-TA-BU-LOUS!!!!!

It all began on Thursday morning with our end-of-the-year assembly. All five of us retirees received a rosebud corsage when we went up to the front of the auditorium. The awards were then handed to the children, I was introduced by our Principal, then I read my three page poem. It just happened to be three pages long because I printed it off in larger sized letters so I could read it without my $5.00 pair of reading glasses from Dollar General.

The audience admired the poem with a resounding round of applause. My few moments of glory a year!! My Principal told everyone she hoped she could talk me into continuing to come back and write one every year. Hey, we all need a little ego booster in our lives, now don't we?

The rest of the day, I got so many wonderful hugs from the children, the parents and my co-workers that I came home with some unexplained bruises! Do hugs bruise?

I also read the book I had written many years ago to some of the 7 classes of Kinders we have. The book is titled, Sticky Mr. Blue and Friends. It is a rhyming book about crayons. It has some lessons in it that help teach youngsters how to conduct themselves. Then as my gift to the children, I run off a copy for each child as a coloring book. One teacher told me she still expects me to share my book at the end of each school year, even though I won't be employed full time. She said ending the school year without my Sticky Mr. Blue and Friends just wouldn't be the same. The kids were so impressed with knowing a real author and illustrator that several asked for my autograph. Actually the book was self-published by MOI on our trusty, and many times not so trusty, copy machine in the workroom !

Friday was basically, PARTY TIME! Lots of gifts, smiles, tears, cleaning, throwing away, checking out the recycle bin for treasures that were moments before someone else's junk. And of course the children who couldn't keep from bouncing in their seats, on the floor, in the hallways, on the sidewalks, on top of one another and in the cafeteria line. Of course, the only way to survive the day is to eat lots of chocolate and bounce right along with them. The old adage, If you can't beat 'em, join 'em! Hey, Going with the flow, is an Elementary School survival tactic!!!

Friday night was very special! My two best buddies, who are also my fellow retirees, and our hubbies went out to dinner at our favorite Mexican Restaurant in our quaint, little town. None of us would be considered party animals, but oh did we celebrate that night! We toasted our ice tea or water glasses, shared our stories about the children, and somehow the conversation made its way to Depends and Poise products. And if that isn't quality celebrating, then the evening was topped off by our waitress, who also happens to be one of our school secretaries, bringing the three of us a complimentary piece of chess pie for dessert while our hubbies looked on with envious looks and drooling mouths. We all agreed, as we said our farewells at the late hour of 8:30, that we definitely will have to do it again sometime.

Although our night before carousing rendered us all sleepy the next morning, we were told to report to our Principal's office before our end-of-the-year assembly to sign some extremely important papers from our new Superintendent. When I rushed into the office, instead of papers waiting, the Principal put on me three stands of gold and purple pearls, WELL THEY LOOKED LIKE PEARLS!, a purple and gold feathered boa, and a diamond tiara. WELL THEY LOOKED LIKE DIAMONDS!!!!!

So, there we all were from the Elementary campus, looking so regal in our purple and gold boas, with us five retirees dressed like QUEENS with our added elegance of pearls and diamonds. The other three campuses, Intermediate, Middle, and High School were so in awe of our regal-ness, that they all sat there with their mouths open and speechless! I wish all of you could have been there to witness such POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE!!!! We were so glorious that we were given beautiful plaques to commemorate this special day. One male teacher from Middle School and another female teacher from High School joined our happy little baby-boomer-teacher-retiree-club up front. They were quite envious of our QUEEN-FOR-A-DAY garb, but alas, they were KING-less and QUEEN-less! Too bad, so sad! We learned our manners from the children throughout the years!!!
NANNY NANNY BOO-BOO!!!!!

(a note of worthiness here) I lost some of my post, so I am stopping for now before frustration sets in and I start throwing a tantrum, much like our Kinders or their parents. I'm too tired to back-pedal to retrieve my Pulitzer prize-winning thoughts from my less than perfect brain, so for now, good-night and I will finish this later today, after church services) Karen

 It's Raining!

The rain just started a moment ago
Not with gentle raindrops
But a sudden deluge of wind, noise
And a downpour released by burgeoning clouds
Unseen within the darkness of the midnight hour.

 The Goals You Seek!

For many years I have written a special poem for our third graders at our elementary school as they leave us at the end of each school year. It's that time again, but this year it is a very special time for me as well. I am retiring after working for the school system for the last 22 years.

On Thursday we are having our awards' program for our elementary students. There are also five of us BABY BOOMERS who will be retiring, two of whom are also two of my dearest friends, so I will be going out with good company.

I decided to share this year's poem with you.

The Goals You Seek!

A child is born
That's how it begins
It takes many people
To help that child win.
From the very beginning
From the day you were born
Early decisions by your families
Helped your educational journey be formed.
You grew and you learned
Under your loved ones' care
Soon it was time for you
To begin school with your unique flair.
Some of you entered school
When you were only three
While others started at Hermes
As four-year-old, Pre-K, busy bees.
Many of you were five
When you came to Kindergarten class
Making new friends, learning the rules
Finding out play break can be a blast!
Yes, there were some tears
As Moms and Dads said their good-byes
But we helped the sad parents
Wipe the tears from their eyes.
First grade came next
Some days slower than others
Some of you had the same teachers
As your fathers and mothers.
You had to study and do homework
Passing onto second grade
Your loved ones who took care of you
Were interested in the progress you made.
Some of you walked
Some of you ran
Some of you bounced
Just because you can.
However you got here
You are at the end of your path
You've passed your TAKS Tests
Your Reading and your Math.
Today we are here
To honor the students in Third Grade
Your families and your teachers
Are witnesses to the strides you have made.
Today we help celebrate
Not your Third Grade endings
We applaud your accomplishments
Guiding you toward your Fourth Grade beginnings.
Congratulations 2007 Third Grade students
As you leave us at the end of the week
We wish you all the best of luck
As you work toward the goals you seek.
Intermediate, Middle
And High School too
Always meeting challenges
While respecting the rules.
Wherever you go
Whatever you do
We want you to know
Our thoughts will be with you.
